History of Bhimashankar
You can hear lots of stories related to this place and one of the
version goes like this that Lord Shiva killed the demon Tripura over here.
There is another version of the story where there was a Demon called Bhima who
was the son of Ravana. He was angered by his father's death at the hands of
Lord Rama. Therefore he developed hatred against Lord Vishnu and prayed to Lord
Brahma and gained powers and got corrupted. Finally, as usual, all the demigods
and the normal beings prayed to Lord Shiva. There was a rigorous battle that
took place between the two. Finally, Bhima realized his mistake during his last
breath and Lord Shiva was pleased and blessed him with his presence and his
name was added along with his name. Thus the name Bhimashankar was formed. It
is said that during the battle Lord Shiva's sweat transformed into river Bhima
over here.
